Metals Industry Health & Safety Passport PLUS

Introduction

Health and safety in the workplace is becoming increasingly complex. Legislative requirements are demanding with high penalties imposed for failure, and rising insurance premiums and lost-time accident costs are placing additional burden on employers in the metals industry.   In addition to providing basic health and safety training for all employees, employers need to ensure that individuals in positions of responsibility – supervisors, foremen, team leaders and managers – have the knowledge and ability to create a positive and effective health and safety culture.

The Metals Industry Health & Safety Passport PLUS builds on the Health & Safety Passport for operatives, to ensure employees at a supervisory level have the ability to support health and safety procedures and ensure the effective implementation of health and safety practices throughout the workplace. It offers a unique combination of essential learning in both the theory and practical application of managing health and safety, together with workplace assessment.

The Health & Safety Passport PLUS is supported by the Health & Safety Executive.

Business Benefits

The Health & Safety Passport PLUS scheme gives your business:

  • a standard of practice recognised by the metals industry as a minimum level of health and
safety application for employees at supervisory level or above

  • better management of health and safety to reduce the risk of accidents and related costs
arising from lost time or litigation

  • evidence of essential health and safety knowledge and competence to show that your
key employees can plan and take action to achieve a positive health and safety workplace culture
that meets the requirements of current legislation

  • individual certification recognising employee achievement of the industry standard, that can be used in negotiating preferential insurance premiums with a growing number of brokers.

Attaining the Passport PLUS

The Passport PLUS can be obtained via one of two equally matched routes:

Each candidate receives a comprehensive set of course notes containing the necessary background and supporting information to achieve the Passport PLUS and providing a useful source of reference for the future.

In addition to the support offered by the trainers and assessors under both Passport PLUS routes, it is strongly recommended that companies nominate a suitable mentor for the candidate(s) to assist the learning and workplace implementation process.

Retaining the Passport PLUS

The Passport PLUS certificate is valid for three years. All Passport PLUS holders will be entered on a central database held by Metals Industry Skills & Performance, and will be notified when renewal is due. Re-assessment is a simple process that re-confirms both knowledge and skills.
