Metals Industry Managing for Success Programme
for managers and personnel
with responsibility for deploying people and plant resources
Skills development and competence-based assessment
in:
- managing culture
- relationship development
- business strategy and
key performance indicators
- business improvement techniques
- effective communication
- coaching
- handling expectations
Introduction
Many managers enter management from
a technical background with little or no previous experience of
managing people. This programme aims to address this issue, as it
has a strong people management content.
For metals companies today a good knowledge of business
improvement techniques is essential, as is the ability to implement
strategy and measure progress and improvements. These aspects are
also covered in this programme.
This programme is suitable for all managers who currently
carry out functional roles in technical, financial, operational
or commercial areas and report to a senior manager or director,
such as Production Managers, Financial Controllers, Sales Managers.
It is also suitable for those managers who work in
smaller companies who may not have had previous development opportunities |
Business Benefits
Managing for Success is designed to:
- enable managers to achieve measurable improvements in
business performance
- change management behaviour, leading to effective management
of people
- enable managers to implement business improvements (through
‘lean’ practices).
Programme Delivery
The programme combines first-class training with
on-the-job assessment in one integrated package:
- modular off-the-job workshops
- integral company based project or projects enable participants
to practice new skills and provide evidence for NVQ assessment
- supported networking with candidates from other companies,
and high levels of tutor support
- proven modern NVQ assessment techniques minimising demands
on candidates time
- regional training venues dependant upon numbers of candidates.
Senior Managers
A key feature of the programme is the involvement of the
senior manager who acts as a mentor and sets and monitors the participant’s
company project. The project is an integral feature of the programme and
is aimed at reinforcing the learning from the workshops, provide evidence
for the NVQ, and result in measurable business improvement.
The senior manager will be required to attend a Senior Manager’s
Workshop aimed at introducing the programme and equipping him/her with
the knowledge to mentor the participant. This also provides a development
opportunity for the senior manager.
Programme Content
The programme is designed to enable delegates to develop
the essential personal and occupational skills to become an effective
manager.
Company Commitment
Companies are required to nominate a line or senior manager
who will attend the introductory workshop and support the development
of the participating manager throughout the programme.
To complete the programme, delegates must attend 9 days
off-the-job training over approximately 12 months. Overnight residence
during each module block is expected. In addition, delegates are required
to carry out ongoing project-based work over a period of up to 15 months,
enabling them to practice new skills, implement their learning and realise
improvements from day one. Evidence gathering for the NVQ will be an integral
part of these projects.
Views from users across the metals industry
capitalising
on lean manufacturing investment …
“Corus Tubes has invested extensively in lean
manufacturing and process improvement, and it is vital that our
managers are equipped with the skills and confidence to facilitate
implementation and roll out within the company, and ensure we can
capitalise on all potential gains. The industry’s Managing
for Success Programme has been developed by senior players in this
industry to ensure it equips our managers with the necessary skills
and capabilities to support this.”

new levels of
manager responsibility …
“We run a multi-shift operation across 15 different
sites with a range of working patterns which include, in some cases,
24 hours per day up to 7 days in the week.
This means that senior management personnel may not
be present on site at all times. We have already invested in structured
development for our team leaders who may consequently be the most
senior personnel on site on some occasions. This has pushed them
into a different and more strategic sphere of operation than that
to which they have previously been used.
The Managing for Success Programme is helping them
develop the necessary skills to modify their thinking and approach
to the job in order to deal with this new situation.”

a lever
for culture change …
“Most companies in the industry have access
to similar equipment and technology and so the main area in which
we can gain an edge over our competitors is through the skills of
our people. Within the workforce the most profound difference we
can make is by developing our middle managers; the people who deploy
our plant and people resources on a day-to-day basis, and ultimately
make a real impact on our business performance.”
