Uses of National Occupational Standards

  • NOS form the basis for National Vocational Qualifications and their equivalent in Scotland, Scottish Vocational Qualifications (N/SVQs).

  • NOS can be used by companies and individual employees for benchmarking purposes. The three most common uses for NOS in the metals industry are:

    1. As part of a performance appraisal review … NOS can be used as a basis for linking staff performance to fit the needs of the organisation. NOS can be used within Performance Appraisal Review to identify essential skills and competencies.

Once identified, these relevant statements of performance can then be taken forward to help with

    2. Identifying training and development priorities … NOS can be used for identifying and structuring training and development and as a means of evaluating the outcomes of particular training interventions.

    3. Self-appraisal - NOS provide a means for the individual to assess his or her abilities against desired skills and competencies.

The first two are organisational applications and the last one is for individuals.
